ICANN opens second evaluation window for domain infrastructure providers
A new application period allows technical providers to qualify for supporting domain name operations in the 2026 gTLD round.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has opened a second application period for its Registry Service Provider (RSP) Evaluation Program, running until 12 August 2026.
The programme focuses on a specific part of how the internet works. When a new domain ending, such as “.example”, is created, it requires technical infrastructure to function. This includes systems that translate domain names into IP addresses, secure the data, and manage registration information.
These technical functions are handled by Registry Service Providers. Instead of evaluating these capabilities separately for every domain application, ICANN assesses providers in advance through the RSP programme.
Once a provider is approved, it can support multiple domain applications without repeating the same technical evaluation. This is intended to simplify and speed up the overall process.
Organisations applying for a new domain in the 2026 round must name at least one approved provider. In some cases, applicants may operate the infrastructure themselves, but they still need to meet the same technical requirements.
The second application window runs alongside the broader call for new domain name applications and may expand the pool of approved providers. ICANN has indicated that no further evaluation rounds are planned for this cycle.
The programme is part of efforts to standardise technical checks and reduce duplication in the domain name application process.
