ICANN seeks public input on integrating domain names with alternative naming systems
ICANN is seeking public feedback on a technical study examining whether internet domain names can be linked to alternative naming systems without compromising the security and stability of the Domain Name System.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has opened a public comment period on an initial report by its Technical Study Group (TSG) examining the integration of generic top-level domains (gTLDs) with alternative naming systems.
The issue concerns proposals from domain registry operators and potential applicants for the 2026 New gTLD Program to offer the same domain name in both the global Domain Name System (DNS) and an alternative naming system. Before allowing such services, ICANN wants to determine whether they can operate securely and without creating risks for the stability of the DNS.
The TSG was established in June 2026 and includes representatives from the Security and Stability Advisory Committee, the Internet Engineering Task Force community, registry operators and alternative naming system operators. Its initial report proposes technical requirements intended to address potential security and stability risks.
ICANN is seeking feedback on whether these requirements are sufficient, as well as comments on other aspects of the report. The consultation is open until 21 September 2026 at 23:59 UTC.
Following the consultation, the TSG will review submissions and revise its report where necessary. A final report will later be published alongside proposed contractual requirements for domain registry operators. The findings are expected to provide a basis for ICANN’s future assessment of requests to integrate gTLDs with alternative naming systems.
