IGF 2026 preparations begin as MAG approves four policy networks

The first Open Consultations and Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) meeting for IGF 2026 has concluded in Nairobi and online, marking the start of the formal preparatory process for next year’s Internet Governance Forum.

During the 2026 preparatory cycle, the MAG approved four Policy Networks. These will focus on AI, cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and open digital infrastructure.

Policy Networks are year-round workstreams. They allow the IGF community to examine specific policy issues in more depth before and beyond the annual meeting. Their work can include consultations, expert discussions, written outputs, and practical recommendations for stakeholders.

The selected themes show where the MAG expects sustained digital policy debate in 2026. AI raises questions about governance, safety, accountability, and access. Cybersecurity remains central to trust and resilience. Digital inclusion focuses on who can meaningfully access and benefit from digital technologies. Open digital infrastructure covers shared systems and tools that support public-interest digital development.

The MAG is also considering a new approach to intersessional work. This would combine elements of Policy Networks and Best Practice Forums into one framework. Best Practice Forums traditionally focus on collecting practical experience and lessons from different stakeholders. Combining the two formats could allow IGF workstreams to support both policy dialogue and practical knowledge-sharing.

The Nairobi meeting was supported by the United Nations Office at Nairobi, MAG Chair Jennifer Chung, and Host Country Co-Chair Ambassador Philip Thigo.

Meeting materials, recordings, and outcomes are available through the IGF meeting page. The next step is the launch of the Call for Session Proposals for IGF 2026.

IGF 2026 will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 14 to 18 December 2026.
