ICANN launches RFP for financial and operational checks in 2026 domain round

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has opened a call for proposals to support evaluations in its next round of domain name applications.

The request concerns the New gTLD Program: 2026 Round. ICANN is looking for a provider to carry out financial and operational assessments of applicants. These checks are part of the application evaluation process.

The issue is risk management. Applicants must demonstrate that they can sustain a domain registry over time. This includes covering costs and managing operations without disruption. The goal is to protect the stability of the Domain Name System.

The evaluation will focus on the applying entity. If one organisation applies for multiple domain names, a single financial assessment will apply to all of them. This approach reduces duplication but increases the importance of the initial review.

The process will take place during the evaluation phase. This phase is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027. External providers will be responsible for analysing financial capacity and operational readiness.

The RFP is open. Any qualified provider can apply. ICANN will assess proposals based on expertise and capability.

Submissions are due by 12 June 2026.
