LACNIC adds ASPA support to its member platform to strengthen routing security
LACNIC has enabled members with an Autonomous System Number (ASN) to create and publish ASPA objects through its MiLACNIC platform. The new capability complements existing route origin validation by allowing network operators to check whether routing paths align with declared transit-provider relationships.
LACNIC has introduced a new option for network operators in Latin America and the Caribbean to strengthen internet routing security. Since early October 2026, members holding an ASN have been able to create and publish Autonomous System Provider Authorisation (ASPA) objects directly through MiLACNIC.
The new feature extends the use of Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI), which helps verify routing information. Until now, Route Origin Authorisations (ROAs) and Route Origin Validation (ROV) have enabled operators to check whether an autonomous system is authorised to originate a particular IP address prefix. ASPA adds information about the providers through which an autonomous system receives transit services.
An organisation responsible for an ASN can use an ASPA object to identify its authorised upstream providers. Network operators can then use these declarations to assess whether relationships along a routing path are consistent with the published authorisations. This can help detect potential route leaks and route hijacks, including cases involving a falsely advertised origin autonomous system.
ASPA is designed to complement, rather than replace, existing origin validation mechanisms. While ROAs support checks on the legitimacy of a route’s origin, ASPA provides additional information for validating aspects of the path taken by routing traffic.
Adoption remains at an early stage. Its effectiveness will depend on more operators publishing ASPA objects and incorporating the information into their routing operations.
LACNIC says it will support this process through training, awareness-raising and opportunities for operators to exchange knowledge. The organisation also directs members to its introductory material on ASPA and free online routing security tutorials available through its events programme.
