ICANN extends deadline for independent objector roles in domain name programme

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has extended the deadline for expressions of interest from individuals seeking to serve as Independent Objectors in the New gTLD Program: 2026 Round. The new deadline is set for 11 May 2026.

Independent Objectors are responsible for reviewing applications for new generic top-level domains, such as “.example”, and raising objections where there may be concerns related to public interest or community impact.

These roles are designed to operate independently. Objectors do not represent specific companies or groups, but instead act in the interest of the broader internet community.

In the 2026 round, ICANN plans to appoint a panel of three Independent Objectors, including a chair. This approach is intended to reduce the risk of conflicts of interest and ensure continuity in the review process.

If an objector identifies grounds for concern, they can formally challenge an application. This may include filing objections or participating in mediation procedures during the evaluation process.

The objection mechanism is one of several safeguards in the domain name application system, allowing concerns to be raised before new domain names are approved.

ICANN has clarified that neither its organisation nor its board can direct Independent Objectors on whether to file objections, reinforcing the independence of the role.

The call for expressions of interest is open to individuals globally, as part of preparations for the next round of domain name applications.
