Eurovisioni calls for stronger media and cultural focus in WSIS+20 Zero Draft

The Italian cultural association Eurovisioni has submitted comments on the WSIS+20 Zero Draft, welcoming it as a strong foundation for global digital cooperation but urging clearer attention to media independence, cultural diversity, and public trust.

Eurovisioni recommends that media organisations be formally recognised as key stakeholders in the WSIS+20 process, noting their vital role in ensuring reliable information and democratic debate. It also calls for stronger language on misinformation and information integrity, especially during elections.

The group warns that the claim of 95% global broadband coverage is misleading, as actual access remains significantly lower in rural and developing regions. It urges the UN to focus on affordable devices and meaningful access, not just network coverage.

Eurovision also proposes referencing the UNESCO 2005 Convention on Cultural Diversity, arguing that cultural and linguistic diversity must be protected in the digital space. Finally, it highlights the need to involve traditional media and national internet governance forums in monitoring progress, ensuring that digital policies strengthen democracy, inclusion, and diversity.
