RIPE NCC opens nominations for Number Resource Organization Number Council seat
The RIPE NCC has launched a call for nominations to fill one seat on the Number Resource Organization Number Council (NRO NC). The successful candidate will be appointed by the RIPE NCC Executive Board for a three-year term beginning in January 2027.
The RIPE NCC has opened nominations for one seat on the Number Resource Organization Number Council (NRO NC), with eligible candidates invited to submit nominations by 30 September 2026. The position will be filled through an appointment by the RIPE NCC Executive Board rather than a community election.
The NRO NC performs the role of the Address Supporting Organization Address Council (ASO AC) within the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers framework. Its responsibilities include overseeing the global Internet number resource policy development process, advising the ICANN Board on Internet number allocation policies, providing recommendations on the recognition of new Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), and appointing representatives to ICANN’s Board of Directors and other bodies.
Individuals residing within the RIPE NCC service region who have participated in at least three RIPE Meetings are eligible to stand for appointment, provided they are not employed by a Regional Internet Registry. Self-nominations are permitted. Nominees must confirm their candidacy by 14 October 2026, provide proof of identity and agree to comply with the RIPE Code of Conduct. The list of confirmed candidates will be published on 15 October 2026.
The RIPE NCC Executive Board will appoint one candidate to serve a three-year term from 1 January 2027 until 31 December 2029. The appointment will be announced by 30 October 2026. The seat is currently held by Hervé Clément, whose term concludes at the end of 2026.
In announcing the call for nominations, RIPE NCC Managing Director and CEO Hans Petter Holen encouraged prospective candidates to familiarise themselves with the work of the NRO NC and engage with current or former members to better understand the role and its responsibilities.
Why does it matter?
The NRO NC plays an important role in the governance of global Internet number resources by coordinating policy development across the five Regional Internet Registries and advising ICANN on matters related to IP address and autonomous system number management. Although only one seat is being filled, the appointment contributes to the continuity of the multistakeholder governance model underpinning the Internet’s numbering system.
