ITU publishes new standard for AI-enabled automated customer service systems
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has published a new technical recommendation defining the architecture and functional requirements for AI-enabled automated customer service systems. The standard provides guidance on integrating AI into customer service while emphasising interoperability, security, privacy, and service quality.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approved Recommendation ITU-T Q.4180 on 29 April 2026, with the recommendation subsequently published on 16 July 2026. The standard establishes a technical framework for AI-enabled automated customer service systems, defining their architecture, functional components, and operational requirements.
The recommendation describes how AI technologies can be integrated into customer service platforms to support interactions between users and service providers across a range of industries. It provides a common reference architecture that enables organisations to deploy AI-driven customer service solutions while maintaining interoperability with existing communication networks and information systems.
The standard outlines the core functional components of an automated customer service system, including user interaction interfaces, natural language processing, dialogue management, knowledge management, service orchestration, and backend integration.
