Instagram ended support for end-to-end encrypted chats on 8 May 2026.

The feature allowed users to create encrypted conversations where only participants in the chat could access message content. Unlike some other messaging services, encryption on Instagram was optional and not enabled by default across all direct messages.

Before the feature was removed, users were advised to download messages and media stored in encrypted chats. After the deadline, encrypted messages and calls could no longer be sent or received through the platform.

The change removed one of Instagram’s stronger privacy protections. End-to-end encryption prevents platforms themselves from accessing message content because decryption keys remain tied to users’ authorised devices.

Some related functions remain active. Users can still report messages from former encrypted chats, while content shared in those conversations could still be forwarded outside encrypted environments.

The move comes amid ongoing debates over encrypted communications, platform safety obligations, and moderation requirements. While several technology companies have expanded encrypted messaging in recent years, Instagram moved in the opposite direction by withdrawing an existing encrypted feature.

Meta has not indicated that the decision affects encryption across its other messaging services.
