Brazil emphasises role of standards in shaping AI policy and economic strategy

A recent government discussion in Brazil focused on the relationship between AI, technical standards, and national competitiveness.

According to Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, the integration of AI and technical standardisation should be treated as a strategic issue for the country. The topic was discussed at a meeting organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, which brought together public institutions and specialists to examine AI governance and its effects on both the productive sector and the state.

During the discussion, Pedro Ivo, secretary for Competitiveness and Regulatory Policy at the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, said technical standards can help reduce costs, facilitate trade, and improve competitiveness. He also said that linking this process to AI could contribute to a more predictable regulatory environment.

The ministry said the meeting also addressed the international dimension of the issue, including Brazil’s efforts to expand its role in shaping standards and guidelines related to AI. The programme included discussions on the global impacts of AI, regulatory challenges, and the role of international organisations in technical regulation for information and communication technologies.

Tiago Munk, the ministry’s coordinator-general for quality infrastructure, said technical standards can play an important role in AI governance by defining criteria, requirements, and good practices for systems, products, and services. He added that Brazil should seek an active role in the development of international standards.

The meeting was presented as part of broader government efforts to strengthen coordination on AI, with a focus on policy direction, institutional coordination, and Brazil’s position in the digital economy.
