ETSI releases OpenCAPIF 5 with support for cross-domain API sharing
Release 5.0.0 introduces CAPIF Interconnection, allowing separate OpenCAPIF deployments to discover and share APIs across organisations. The update also completes visibility controls, adds a new discovery service and improves deployment flexibility and security.
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has announced version 5.0.0 of OpenCAPIF, an open-source implementation of the Common API Framework (CAPIF). The release introduces features that allow independently operated CAPIF platforms to connect and share application programming interfaces (APIs) across organisational boundaries.
The main addition, CAPIF Interconnection, enables API consumers on one platform to discover and access services provided through another. API providers retain control over which APIs are shared. The feature supports deployments involving different organisations and multiple domains, following the security procedures defined in 3GPP Release 19.
Release 5 also completes the Visibility Control functionality introduced in the previous version. API providers can now determine who can view and use their APIs, as well as the duration of that access. This is intended to support deployments where control over API visibility and privacy is important.
Another addition is the Open Discover Service, which allows developers to check whether the APIs they need are available on a platform before registering. The update also allows different providers to publish APIs under the same name without creating conflicts.
The release includes changes to deployment packages intended to make installation faster and lighter, alongside local tools for testing interconnection on a single machine. Security updates address reported vulnerabilities and bring key components up to date.
OpenCAPIF remains aligned with 3GPP CAPIF Release 19. With the introduction of interconnection, Release 5 extends the framework beyond individual deployments towards connected API ecosystems.
Further details on the new features, enhancements and fixes are available in the OpenCAPIF Release 5 blog post.
