South Korea and Mexico explore closer cooperation on AI

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco in Seoul on Monday, 24 August 2024, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), energy security and other areas of mutual interest, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea said.

Cho said bilateral ties ‘have become more important than ever amid growing uncertainty in the global economy, ranging from supply chains and energy, to food and security’. He called for strengthening ‘the institutional foundation’ for trade and investment and for diversifying cooperation into areas such as AI, space, education and the defence industry.

Velasco stressed ‘the need for the two countries to contribute to building a more inclusive and representative international order that reflects the perspectives of middle powers’. He added that the relationship is based on shared principles of democracy, human rights and respect for international law.

The ministers also noted that President Lee Jae‑myung has accepted an invitation from President Claudia Sheinbaum to visit Mexico, an invitation that was extended in May.
