The latest ITU and Internet Society publications show how rural connectivity has moved beyond simple access points toward more resilient, community-led digital ecosystems. The new 2026 report, From Telecentres, Community Networks to Sustainable Smart Villages and Smart Islands, examines ten case studies across India, Indonesia, Kiribati, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, and Vanuatu to identify what makes connectivity initiatives sustainable over time.

At the heart of the report is a practical idea: infrastructure alone is not enough. The study evaluates initiatives across six sustainability dimensions – financial, socio-cultural, organisational, operational, policy, and environmental – to understand why some community-based projects endure while others struggle.

A new way of thinking about connectivity
