UN Security Council schedules October discussion on emerging technologies and security
The UN Security Council has included emerging technologies and security in its provisional October programme, with a high-level briefing scheduled for 29 October under Greece’s presidency.
The UN Security Council has included ‘Maintenance of international peace and security: Emerging technologies and security‘ in its provisional programme of work for October 2026. The discussion is scheduled for 29 October under Greece’s presidency.
The meeting will be a high-level briefing on emerging technologies, with a particular focus on maritime security. It is one of two signature events planned by Greece during its presidency of the Council.
The planned discussion comes as the Council has increased its attention to the security implications of emerging technologies. A high-level briefing on artificial intelligence and international security was held in September, while the October meeting will address emerging technologies more broadly.
The focus on maritime security reflects Greece’s broader priorities for its presidency. The Council has previously considered maritime security in relation to specific conflicts and threats, while recent discussions have also explored whether emerging technologies should receive greater attention at the thematic level.
The October discussion is expected to address how technologies can affect international peace and security, including their implications for maritime operations and security. Recent Council discussions have also raised questions about the role of artificial intelligence and other technologies within the Council’s mandate and the need to avoid duplicating work carried out in other UN forums.
The programme of work was adopted provisionally by Council members on 1 October. As with other monthly programmes, it provides a framework for the Council’s scheduled activities and may be adjusted during the month.
