Singapore orders Meta to block religiously offensive video under Online Criminal Harms Act

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) issued five Disabling Directions to Meta requiring the company to restrict access to the content for users in Singapore. Although the original video had already been removed, authorities said it continued circulating through reposts on social media platforms.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the video may constitute an offence under Section 17F(4) of the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act 1990, which criminalises insulting another person’s religion in Singapore.

Authorities noted that even reposting the video to criticise the act could contribute to spreading offensive material. Members of the public who encounter such content are encouraged to report it to authorities rather than share it.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, while officials reiterated that Singapore maintains strict measures to protect racial and religious harmony online.
