EU Commission to delay high risk AI guidance
The European Commission has postponed publication of guidelines clarifying high-risk AI systems under the EU AI Act, marking a second missed deadline and adding to ongoing implementation delays.
The European Commission has confirmed to Euractiv that it will again delay publishing guidance on high-risk AI systems under the EU Artificial Intelligence Act. The guidelines had originally been expected by 2 February 2026 but will now be issued under a revised timeline.
The guidelines are intended to clarify which AI systems fall into the ‘high-risk’ category under the AI Act. Systems classified as high risk are subject to stricter obligations, including requirements related to risk management, documentation, transparency, and human oversight.
According to Commission officials, additional time is needed to take into account substantial feedback received from stakeholders during consultations. The postponement represents the second missed deadline for this guidance.
The delay comes amid broader challenges in implementing the AI Act. Several EU member states have not yet designated national authorities responsible for supervising compliance, which is a necessary step for enforcement once the rules become applicable.
