Launch of open call for Independent International Scientific Panel on AI
Candidates with expertise in core AI fields (including generative AI, machine learning, robotics, and AI safety), applied AI (health, climate, social sciences, digital society), and related interdisciplinary areas such as ethics, governance, and risk assessment are invited to apply.

The United Nations Secretary-General has launched an open call for candidates to join the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This panel, agreed upon by UN member states in September 2024 as part of the Global Digital Compact, will consist of 40 members serving three-year terms starting in 2026. The panel’s mission is to provide impartial, multidisciplinary, evidence-based scientific assessments of AI’s opportunities, risks, and impacts globally.
The panel will produce an annual, policy-relevant but non-prescriptive summary report presented to the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, along with up to two annual updates engaging with the UN General Assembly plenary. The members will serve in their personal capacities, ensuring independence from governments, corporations, or institutions.
Candidates with expertise in core AI fields (including generative AI, machine learning, robotics, and AI safety), applied AI (health, climate, social sciences, digital society), and related interdisciplinary areas such as ethics, governance, and risk assessment are invited to apply. The open call runs until 31 October 2025, after which the Secretary-General will recommend the 40 members to the General Assembly for appointment.
This initiative is designed to foster global scientific cooperation and provide the international community with authoritative insights to support responsible and inclusive AI governance.
