The United Nations held a high-level meeting on 25 September to mark the launch of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance. The initiative was created by the UN General Assembly in August and is intended to provide a forum for international discussions on how AI should be regulated and applied.

Speakers at the meeting highlighted both the economic opportunities and the governance challenges posed by AI, with particular attention to its role in supporting development in the Global South. Representatives from governments, civil society, and other sectors emphasised the need for inclusive and adaptable rules to manage the rapid growth of the technology. The session concluded with a youth delegate stressing that younger generations will be directly affected by the decisions taken today.

The Global Dialogue on AI Governance is tasked, as decided by the UN General Assembly this August, with facilitating open, transparent and inclusive discussions on AI governance. The dialogue is set to have its first meeting in 2026, along with the AI for Good Summit in Geneva.

The Global Dialogue is scheduled to begin its first formal sessions in 2026, alongside the AI for Good Summit in Geneva. It will serve as an ongoing process for gathering perspectives and shaping international approaches to AI governance.
