The Number Resource Organization increases its contribution to Internet Governance Forum

The Number Resource Organization (NRO) has increased its financial contribution to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) to US$100,000.

The contribution was formally accepted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs on 28 August 2026. It will support the IGF and its Secretariat as the Forum continues its work as a global platform for dialogue on Internet governance.

The NRO said the increased contribution reflects the commitment of the five Regional Internet Registries to the multistakeholder model of Internet governance and to the IGF’s role in bringing together governments, the private sector, civil society, the technical and academic communities, and Internet users.

The announcement follows the decision in the United Nations’ WSIS+20 outcome document to establish the IGF as a permanent UN forum. Under the decision, the IGF Secretariat will be hosted by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs on a stable and sustainable basis, with appropriate staffing and resources.

The outcome document also recognises the IGF as the primary multistakeholder platform for discussing Internet governance. It calls for stronger support for the Secretariat, sustainable funding, greater support for national and regional IGF initiatives, and broader participation from developing countries and underrepresented communities.

The NRO welcomed the permanent status of the IGF while highlighting the importance of stable and predictable support for its long-term operation. It encouraged organisations and stakeholders across the Internet community to provide financial and other resources to support the Forum’s permanent mandate and inclusive participation in Internet governance.
