Spain advances draft law to implement EU AI Act
Spain’s government has approved a draft law adapting the EU AI Act into national legislation and defining which authorities will supervise AI systems across different sectors.
Spain’s Council of Ministers has approved a draft Organic Law designed to incorporate the Artificial Intelligence Act into the country’s national legal framework.
The proposal designates Spain’s Spanish Artificial Intelligence Supervisory Agency, based in A Coruña, as the central authority responsible for AI oversight.
The draft also distributes supervisory responsibilities across sector-specific regulators.
According to the proposal, the Bank of Spain would oversee AI systems used in financial contexts, while the Spanish Data Protection Agency would handle data-related matters linked to AI systems.
The General Council of the Judiciary would be responsible for issues involving AI systems used within judicial or justice-related environments.
