OpenAI launches new AI program for US government use

OpenAI announced the launch of OpenAI for Government, a new initiative aimed at making its advanced AI tools available to US public sector agencies. The program brings together existing partnerships and products, such as ChatGPT Gov and ChatGPT Enterprise, into a single framework designed to support federal, state, and local government operations.

The initiative offers access to OpenAI’s most capable models in secure, compliant environments. Government users will also benefit from customised AI models for select national security applications, hands-on technical support, and early visibility into upcoming features to support long-term planning.

OpenAI for Government builds on current collaborations with various federal entities, including the U.S. National Laboratories, NASA, NIH, the Department of the Treasury, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. One of its first new projects under the program is a pilot with the U.S. Department of Defense through its Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO). The $200 million contract will support AI-driven efforts to improve administrative processes such as health care delivery, data analysis for procurement, and cyber defense planning. All implementations are required to align with OpenAI’s established use policies.

Early results from state-level programs suggest practical time savings. A pilot in Pennsylvania found that employees saved an average of 105 minutes daily by using ChatGPT for repetitive administrative tasks. At the federal level, AI tools are being deployed at national laboratories to support scientific research, national security initiatives, and public sector innovation.

OpenAI states that the aim of the initiative is to support public servants by reducing administrative burdens and enhancing their ability to focus on high-priority work. The company emphasised that all activities under this program will be conducted in close coordination with government agencies, ensuring tools are deployed safely and securely.
