ICANN adds uptime tracking to Domain Metrica
ICANN has introduced a new Time to Mitigation metric in Domain Metrica to show how long reported domains remain reachable after being identified as potential DNS abuse.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has added new uptime measurement capabilities to its Domain Metrica platform, providing data on how long reported domain names remain reachable before mitigation.
Domain Metrica combines information on domain registrations and potential Domain Name System (DNS) abuse. The new functionality is intended to help researchers, the ICANN community and other stakeholders assess how quickly reported malicious domains are addressed.
The main new metric, called Time to Mitigation (TTM), estimates the period between a domain’s first and last successful DNS resolution. In simple terms, it shows how long a reported domain could still be reached through the DNS after it was identified.
Users can also view the domain’s monitoring status, the first and last successful DNS resolutions, and the observed mitigation outcome where that information is available. These indicators provide a timeline of a domain from its first observed activity through mitigation.
The new measurements have been integrated into Domain Search, allowing users to examine individual reported domains without moving to a separate system.
ICANN said the release is the first in a planned series of updates aimed at measuring DNS abuse mitigation more systematically. Future developments could include visualisations on the Domain Metrica homepage, dedicated views for registrars and registries, and API access for organisations that want to use the data in their own analysis and reporting.
