Global Network Initiative issues statement on network disruption during Uganda’s 2026 elections
The Global Network Initiative has commented on the internet disruption reported in Uganda during the January 2026 general elections, referring to its broader work on the impacts of network shutdowns and applicable international standards.
The Global Network Initiative (GNI) has released a statement addressing the network disruption that coincided with Uganda’s general elections in January 2026.
GNI stated that internet connectivity, including access to social media and communication services, should be restored, and that any future restrictions should align with international human rights standards, be subject to independent oversight, and meet requirements of necessity, proportionality, and limited duration.
In its statement, GNI recalled previous research and documentation showing that network disruptions can have wide-ranging consequences, including impacts on economic activity, access to information, and public safety.
The statement adds to ongoing international attention on the network disruptions during elections in Uganda.
