EU and Japan hold 9th digital policy dialogue to advance cooperation
The European Union and Japan met in Tokyo to review progress and deepen cooperation across key digital policy areas, including AI, semiconductors, and cybersecurity.
The European Union and Japan held their 9th Digital Policy Dialogue on 25 March 2026 in Tokyo, focusing on strengthening cooperation across a range of digital policy areas.
The meeting covered updates and future collaboration on topics including semiconductors, quantum technologies, AI, online platforms, cybersecurity, and data economy policies. The Dialogue serves as a coordination forum under the broader EU-Japan Digital Partnership.
The session was co-chaired by Thomas Skordas and Toshihiko Shibuya, representing the European Commission and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The EU-Japan Digital Partnership, launched in 2022, is a framework for cooperation on digital technologies and policy. It covers areas such as 5G and 6G networks, AI, semiconductors, cybersecurity, digital identity, and data governance. The partnership is designed to support joint work on technological development and regulatory approaches.
The Dialogue also contributes to preparing future meetings of the EU-Japan Digital Partnership Council, where both sides define priorities and agree on joint actions.
Recent cooperation between the EU and Japan has included joint work on supply chain resilience in semiconductors, standards for emerging technologies such as AI and quantum, and coordination on digital market regulation.
