Elon Musk to join world tech leaders at global AI summit in the UK

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and social media platform X (formerly Twitter), is expected to attend the upcoming global artificial intelligence (AI) safety summit in the UK.
On Nov. 1–2, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will host about 100 participants at Bletchley Park, the historical site of the World War II code breakers. Britain is bringing together global leaders, AI companies, AI scientists, technologists, and civil society organizations to discuss the potential risks and safe development of AI.

The summit aims to build an international consensus on the need to ensure that AI systems do not “get out of control” and address AI’s unpredictable advancements, with the possibility for humans to lose control over the technology.

Sunak has indicated Musk’s presence in a post on X, adding they would meet after the summit.
Musk has previously expressed concerns about the speed of AI’s development and has even called for a pause on advanced AI projects. One of his companies, Tesla, is currently developing sophisticated AI systems.

Why does it matter?
The summit is crucial to the UK as it tries to position the country as a world power in AI, finding a space between the US, China, and the European Union. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has already established the world’s first AI safety institute. The event comes days after US President Biden signed a landmark executive order on the development of AI, and the G7 leaders agreed on an AI code of conduct for companies in line with the Hiroshima AI Process. Other world leaders in attendance include US Vice President Kamala Harris, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
