Civil society groups condemn Zambia’s role in RightsCon cancellation
More than 130 organisations have condemned the Zambian government’s last-minute decision that led to the cancellation of RightsCon 2026.
A coalition of over 130 civil society organisations and digital rights actors has condemned the Government of Zambia for the cancellation of RightsCon 2026, which was scheduled to take place in Lusaka and online.
In a joint statement, the groups said the government’s late announcement disrupted preparations for the event, which was expected to bring together thousands of participants from across the digital policy, human rights, and technology sectors.
According to the statement, the cancellation resulted in financial and logistical consequences for organisers, participants, and local businesses, many of whom had already made travel and accommodation arrangements.
The organisations also raised concerns about the lack of public explanation for the decision. Authorities had referred to alignment with national priorities and public interest considerations, but did not provide further details.
RightsCon is one of the main global forums on digital rights and internet governance. The 2026 edition would have marked its first hosting in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The signatories argue that the cancellation affects opportunities for multistakeholder dialogue and international cooperation on digital policy issues, and may have broader implications for civic space and participation in the lead-up to national elections.
