Brazil’s data protection authority releases English report on generative AI

Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has released an English-language version of its Technology Radar – Generative Artificial Intelligence, making the third volume in its Technology Radar series available to the international data protection community.

Developed by ANPD’s Superintendency of Technological Innovation (Sitec), the report examines developments in generative AI and their implications for privacy and personal data protection under Brazil’s General Data Protection Law (LGPD).

The report covers several issues relevant to data protection, including web scraping and its potential processing of personal data, the generation of synthetic content that may resemble personal data, and the relationship between personal data processing and generative AI systems.

It also examines the technology in relation to the principles established by the LGPD and presents examples of generative AI applications in Brazil, including in the public sector, healthcare and financial services.

The Technology Radar series is designed to analyse emerging technologies that could significantly affect the data protection landscape. Previous editions have addressed smart cities and biometric and facial recognition. The English version of the generative AI report expands access to ANPD’s technical analysis for researchers, regulators and other stakeholders outside Brazil.
