20th anniversary of .eu domain

The EU’s .eu domain reaches its 20-year milestone, with over 3.8 million registrations and continued use by companies, organisations, and individuals across the region.

20th anniversary of .eu domain

The European Commission has marked 20 years of the .eu top-level domain, which has been used by businesses, organisations, and individuals across the European Union since its launch.

The .eu domain currently counts more than 3.8 million active registrations and is among the most widely used domain names in Europe. According to the Commission, it ranks fourth in Europe and ninth globally.

The domain allows users to register a single web address associated with the EU, which can be used across different member states. It has been used by companies and institutions operating across borders, including for e-commerce and online services.

Registration numbers have continued to grow, with annual increases of over 2%, and around 80% of domain names being renewed.

The infrastructure supporting the domain has also evolved over time. According to the Commission, systems now include tools aimed at preventing misuse, monitoring data quality, and maintaining operational stability.

To mark the anniversary, an event titled “European Voices for the Future of the Internet” is scheduled for 26–27 May 2026, where discussions will focus on the role of digital policy and internet governance in Europe.
