Civil society presence at ICANN81 highlights engagement needs

At ICANN81 in Istanbul on 13 November 2024, CADE co-hosted a side event attended by close to 15 civil society stakeholders. The conversation focused on the need for long-term structural support to enable sustained CSO participation in ICANN, where issues like domain-name policy and DNS abuse have significant rights implications.

Participants highlighted challenges such as ICANN’s procedural complexity and the reliance on unpaid volunteer labour. They proposed mentorship initiatives, regional onboarding sessions, and stronger representation of CSOs in leadership spaces. These recommendations will inform CADE’s engagement plans for 2025.
