EU AI Board reviews AI Act implementation and enforcement priorities
The EU AI Board has reviewed progress on AI Act implementation, enforcement and transparency rules, alongside developments in European and international AI policy.
The EU AI Board held its ninth meeting on 17 September 2026, bringing together representatives to review current priorities for implementing EU artificial intelligence policy. The meeting was chaired by the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU and was the first attended by Moldova as an observer.
Discussions covered developments in EU and international AI policy, the European Commission’s enforcement activities and priorities, and the implementation of the AI Act. The Board also considered the Commission’s Action Plan on Cybersecurity and AI.
The Commission provided an update on developments in frontier AI, including recent AI incidents and emerging capabilities. Participants also discussed strengthening Europe’s AI and frontier technology capabilities, AI safety, the uptake of AI across key industries and coordination among EU member states.
AI Act implementation was another focus. The Commission presented updates on recommendations to support AI literacy and on measures related to the transparency rules that became applicable on 2 August 2026. These include the Code of Practice and guidelines covering AI transparency obligations.
The Board also discussed cooperation on market surveillance and governance arrangements for pre-market conformity assessments under the AI Act. Other issues included a possible secondment programme for market surveillance authorities to the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), as well as the Board’s own governance structures.
The cybersecurity discussions included the development, evaluation and testing of infrastructure for cybersecurity capabilities related to frontier AI. Participants also considered how the EU’s cybersecurity ecosystem can prepare for challenges and opportunities arising from AI.
The tenth AI Board meeting is expected to take place on 18 November 2026, alongside the Apply AI Summit in Brussels. The summit will conclude European AI Innovation Month, which is scheduled to open on 14 October in Dublin.
