Karisma hosts workshop on the digitalisation of public services in Riohacha

On 25 June 2026, Karisma organised a workshop in Riohacha, La Guajira, Colombia, on the digitalisation of public services, bringing together 16 participants, including community leaders, university students, representatives of Indigenous communities, and members of local social organisations. The workshop stimulated participants to reflect on how the increasing digitalisation of public services is shaping everyday life and access to essential rights. 

During participatory discussions, attendees shared their experiences using online platforms for services such as healthcare, public administration, payments, and information requests, while collectively developing a shared understanding of what the digitalisation of public services means in their local context.

Participants examined both the opportunities and the challenges associated with digitalisation, highlighting improvements in the accessibility of some services alongside persistent barriers related to internet connectivity, limited access to digital devices, varying levels of digital literacy, and insufficient institutional support. 

The workshop also introduced internet governance by connecting the concept to practical issues such as connectivity, the functioning of digital platforms, and decisions affecting the delivery of public services. Discussions highlighted that while many participants were unfamiliar with the term internet governance, they readily recognised its relevance to their daily experiences. 

The workshop concluded with a discussion of actions to improve digital public services, along with practical guidance on carrying out online procedures more securely and protecting personal information. 

Building on this work, Karisma is planning two more workshops as part of the same initiative. The next visits are scheduled for 19 August 2026 in Cusco, Peru, and 22 August 2026 in Quito, Ecuador.
