Heinrich Böll Foundation launches fellowship for Global South voices in AI governance

The Heinrich Böll Foundation Washington, DC launched the Global Majority AI Fellowship to support civil society experts from the Global South in participating in the first session of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance.

The first Global Dialogue will take place in Geneva on 6 and 7 July 2026, alongside ITU Summit and WSIS Forum. The fellowship is intended to connect the Geneva meeting with a second session planned in New York in May 2027.

The initiative focuses on increasing participation from underrepresented regions in global AI governance discussions. It is aimed at people working on AI governance, digital rights, data justice, environmental and climate justice, and related fields.

The programme covers international travel, local transport, and up to three nights of accommodation in Geneva. It also supports registration, accreditation, and visibility for selected fellows.

The Global Dialogue is expected to address themes including AI divides, human rights, transparency, accountability, human oversight, safe and trustworthy AI, and the social, economic, cultural and technical implications of AI.

Applications closed on 18 May 2026.
