European Commission marks 20 years of the .eu domain
The European Commission celebrated the 20th anniversary of the .eu top-level domain during the 2026 EuroDIG meeting in Brussels.
The European Commission marked the 20th anniversary of the .eu top-level domain on 26 and 27 May during the 2026 European Internet Governance Dialogue (EuroDIG) in Brussels.
Introduced in 2006, the .eu domain was created to provide a shared online identity linked to the European Union and its Single Market. According to the Commission, the domain now counts around 3.8 million registrations, making it one of Europe’s largest country-code top-level domains.
The anniversary was highlighted during EuroDIG discussions involving policymakers, technical community members, civil society groups, and internet governance experts.
Commission officials described .eu as a symbol of European identity online and emphasised its role in supporting cross-border digital activity within the EU.
Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said the domain has become associated with trust, continuity, and European digital infrastructure over the past two decades.
