India establishes expert committee to inform AI governance framework

India has created a Technology and Policy Expert Committee to support the development of its artificial intelligence governance framework, as part of a broader effort to structure decision-making in this area.

The committee, established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, will provide advice to the AI Governance and Economic Group, which is responsible for setting strategic direction and coordinating AI-related policies across government.

Chaired by the ministry’s Secretary, the committee brings together representatives from academia, industry, and digital policy. Its role is to translate technical developments and regulatory trends into practical recommendations that can inform policy design and implementation.

The initiative reflects an attempt to connect technical expertise with governance processes, particularly as AI systems raise complex regulatory and economic questions. It also includes a focus on international engagement, suggesting that global policy developments will inform domestic approaches.

According to the ministry, the framework is intended to remain adaptive, allowing for adjustments as technologies evolve. It is also designed to align governance choices with India’s broader economic priorities and social context, including considerations around development and digital transformation.
