AFRINIC receives new allocation of internet routing numbers
AFRINIC has been assigned a new block of Autonomous System Numbers, helping support the continued growth of internet networks in Africa.
The African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) has received a new block of Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), covering the range AS329728 to AS330751.
To understand what this means, ASNs are unique identifiers used on the internet to manage how data travels between networks. Every large network, such as an internet service provider, uses an ASN to exchange traffic with other networks and ensure that data reaches the correct destination.
IANA is responsible for distributing these numbers globally. It allocates blocks of ASNs to regional organisations like AFRINIC, which then assign them to operators within their region. In this case, AFRINIC manages internet number resources for Africa.
The new allocation ensures that there are enough ASNs available to support the continued expansion of networks across the region. As more organisations connect to the internet or build their own infrastructure, additional identifiers are needed to keep global routing systems functioning properly.
The allocation follows established global policies for distributing these resources. The new ASN range has already been added to global registries and AFRINIC’s internal inventory, making it available for future assignments.
