Civil society oral input calls for inclusive participation in global AI governance dialogue

The Multistakeholder Approaches to Participation in AI Governance (MAP-AI) initiative has delivered oral input to the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, emphasising the need for more inclusive and effective participation in shaping global AI policy.

The initiative, led by the Global Network Initiative (GNI) and the Centre for Communication Governance at the National Law University Delhi, focuses on improving how different stakeholders engage in AI governance processes.

In its oral contribution, MAP-AI highlighted that current global discussions on artificial intelligence often lack balanced participation. It pointed to the limited representation of civil society and stakeholders from the Global Majority, and stressed the need to address these gaps.

The input underlined that participation should be meaningful, not only allowing stakeholders to attend discussions, but also enabling them to influence outcomes. This includes creating structures that support engagement, improving access to decision-making spaces, and ensuring that diverse perspectives are reflected in policy development.

The initiative also framed this issue in the context of ongoing global efforts to develop AI governance frameworks. As multiple international processes emerge, the oral input called for coordination and alignment to avoid fragmented approaches and ensure that governance models reflect a wider range of experiences and priorities.

MAP-AI was originally launched to support engagement at the India AI Impact Summit in February 2026, but its broader objective is to strengthen multistakeholder participation across global AI governance initiatives.
