US unveils national AI policy framework focused on innovation and safeguards

The United States has introduced a national AI policy framework aimed at guiding how AI is developed and used across government and society.

The framework outlines a broad strategy to strengthen the country’s position in AI while addressing risks linked to privacy, security, and public trust. It applies to federal agencies and is intended to coordinate efforts across different sectors.

At its core are six policy objectives. These include protecting children online, giving parents tools to manage digital risks, supporting communities and small businesses, respecting intellectual property rights, safeguarding free speech, and promoting innovation.

The plan also places emphasis on workforce development. It calls for training and education initiatives to prepare workers for jobs shaped by AI technologies.

In addition, the framework highlights the importance of consistent regulation nationwide. It warns that differing rules between US states could create fragmentation and slow down innovation, and calls for closer coordination between federal and state authorities.

Beyond domestic priorities, the policy includes elements related to data governance, international cooperation, and national security. It also proposes stronger oversight of AI systems used by the government, with a focus on transparency and accountability.

The framework encourages increased investment in AI research and deployment, alongside mechanisms to ensure that AI systems deliver public benefits while managing potential risks.
