Towards WTDC-25: Shaping Regional Priorities for Africa’s Digital Development
2 October 2025
As part of preparations for the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25), KICTANet held an online webinar on 2 October 2025 to brief civil society on the ITU development process and Kenya’s preparations for Baku. The Communications Authority of Kenya outlined the ITU structure, the WTDC mandate and outputs (declarations, action plans, regional initiatives, resolutions, and study group questions), stressing stakeholder input. Highlighted priorities included resilient infrastructure, inclusive digital skills, trustworthy AI, cybersecurity, sustainable financing, and Kenya’s role in African common proposals.
The second part examined WTDC study groups and ways to engage (sector membership, working with national reps, project proposals), with examples such as inclusive ICTs for persons with disabilities.
An interactive Q&A addressed the role of civil society in reflecting national perspectives within African common positions while preserving country-specific concerns, with reference to the WTDC-22 Kigali Declaration and Action Plan as a guide for ongoing engagement. The event concluded by reaffirming awareness-raising objectives, multistakeholder collaboration, and integrating feedback into Kenya’s ITU/WTDC strategy.
