The 14th Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF 2025), scheduled for 29–31 May 2025 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is a pivotal event for stakeholders across the continent. This year’s theme, ‘Empowering Africa’s Digital Future,’ underscores the importance of inclusive dialogue in shaping the continent’s digital landscape.

Afigf 2025 will serve as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas on crucial internet governance issues in the African region. The forum will feature plenary sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities to foster inclusive dialogue on internet governance in Africa.

Main thematic areas and subthemes:

  1. Digital public infrastructure (DPI) and data governance: Exploring the development and management of digital infrastructures and data policies to ensure equitable access and control over digital resources.
  2. Cybersecurity, resilience, and trust: Addressing the challenges of securing digital environments, building resilience against cyber threats, and fostering trust among users and institutions.
  3. Artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies: Examining the implications of AI and other emerging technologies on society, economy, and governance, ensuring they align with Africa’s development goals.
  4. Universal access and meaningful connectivity: Focusing on strategies to bridge the digital divide, ensuring all communities have access to reliable and affordable internet services.
  5. Enhancing digital cooperation: Promoting collaboration among African nations and global partners to harmonise digital policies and initiatives, aligning with frameworks like the Global Digital Compact and the sustainable development goals.

For civil society, participation in AfIGF 2025 is crucial. The forum provides a platform to influence policies on digital rights, access, and governance, ensuring that the voices of diverse communities are heard. Engaging in these discussions helps advocate for equitable internet access, data protection, and the safeguarding of human rights online.

Moreover, Afigf 2025 offers opportunities for networking, collaboration, and capacity development. By connecting with policymakers, technologists, and fellow advocates, civil society organisations can forge partnerships that drive meaningful change.
