EU launches consultations on AI strategy for research

The European Commission has launched two consultations, a Call for Evidence and a targeted questionnaire – to shape the upcoming European Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Science. The strategy aims to accelerate the responsible use of AI in research, making it more accessible and impactful in fields like climate change, health, and clean technologies. A key outcome will be the creation of the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE), which would serve as a centralized support for AI-driven scientific advancement across the EU.

Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva encouraged researchers to participate and stressed that Europe needs to lead AI-driven scientific transformation. The strategy will also focus on improving access to AI tools, infrastructure, and investment to strengthen EU innovation and global competitiveness.

An updated set of guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research has also been released to guide the scientific community.

The consultations are open until 5 June 2025, and input will help shape priorities around funding, infrastructure, talent, and policy coordination. This initiative will align with the broader Apply AI strategy outlined in the recently announced AI Continent Action Plan.
