United States releases AI Action Plan

The US government released America’s AI Action Plan, a federal roadmap designed to maintain the country’s global leadership in artificial intelligence (AI). Structured around three main pillars—innovation, infrastructure, and international diplomacy and security—the plan outlines measures to foster technological development while addressing national security and workforce impacts.

Under the first pillar, the plan calls for removing regulatory barriers to AI development, supporting open-source models, and promoting AI adoption across sectors such as healthcare and defense. It also proposes workforce retraining programs and initiatives to enhance AI literacy and job resilience.

The second pillar focuses on infrastructure, including streamlined permitting for data centers and chip manufacturing, expansion of the energy grid, and construction of secure AI facilities for military and intelligence use. Measures to improve cybersecurity, promote secure-by-design AI systems, and train a skilled workforce are also detailed.

The third pillar addresses the global dimension, emphasising AI exports to allied nations, enhanced export controls, and countering foreign influence in international AI governance. The plan includes measures to assess risks from frontier models and promote biosecurity standards in AI-enabled research.

The Action Plan is part of a broader federal effort to coordinate AI policy, prioritise national interests, and ensure technological resilience amid global competition.
